It is fair to say that the secret to success in most businesses is having a great team that work together, a team that takes responsibility for their position and a team that supports each other. Unfortunately, getting great team members isn’t just up to luck, it’s about the right mentoring, support & leadership in your business.
Below are some tips that we’ve put together which have been great for our business:
- GETTING TEAM MEMBERS HAPPY AT WORK
- Pay them competitively – this doesn’t have to be the top of the market, but it does have to be competitive
- Give them the flexibility they desire provided it doesn’t inhibit service delivery
- Give them the recognition they deserve – ensure they get job satisfaction from you or your customers
- Encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and their workload so you don’t have to micromanage them – gives them a sense of achievement
- Use positive reinforcement as a weapon
- Don’t be afraid to have some good-natured fun one on one
- Train them well and give them an opportunity for progression – map out their path and show them they have a future with you
- ENSURE THEY ALL KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THEM
- Paint them a picture of what good looks like in their role – they crave knowing what you want so they can do that!
- Who and what are they responsible for?
- Who are they supposed to take pressure off and how are they to go about doing that?
- What won’t be tolerated by the team?
- When someone is under pressure, throw it open to the team to find a solution – get their commitment and buy in to the team’s workload
- Give the team regular updates on performance against the goals
- SET SOME SIMPLE RULES FOR YOUR TEAM TO FOSTER A GREAT WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- You have to give to get – if you aren’t helping the other person out it’s unreasonable to expect them to help you out.
- Be a valuable team member – what is your contribution to the team goals and why is it valuable?
- Do the most for the team not the least – be the first person to put your hand up and volunteer to undertake tasks rather than the last
- Don’t apportion blame for mistakes – learn from them and concentrate on what is required to rectify them
- Be thankful and appreciative of those around you
- Stay above the line – no-one likes team members who live below the line and Blame, Make Excuses or Deny
- Deal with unrest/mediocracy at the earliest opportunity
- When someone is under pressure, throw it open to the team to find a solution
- A team is only as strong as its weakest link so the strong need to help the weak for the team to achieve
- Feedback, both positive and negative, is our friend!
